Island Logistics: Ferries, Float Planes, and Making Victoria Profitable

By Vernon Douglas · March 14, 2025

Playing on Vancouver Island is a magical experience, but the logistics can be a nightmare if you aren't prepared. The ferry cost alone—for a vehicle and two passengers—can eat up a $300 DJ fee before you even leave the terminal. Here is how to make the "Island Run" work for you.

The Walk-On Strategy

Unless you are bringing a full sound system, leave the car in Vancouver. Take the SkyTrain to Horseshoe Bay or Tsawwassen and walk on the ferry. It saves you over 00 round trip and eliminates the stress of ferry reservations. Arrange for the promoter to pick you up on the other side. This simple switch turns a break-even gig into a profitable one.

The Victoria-Nanaimo Double Header

To make the travel time worth it, try to book a Friday in Victoria (at the VEC or a private loft) and a Saturday in Nanaimo (at The Queen's or a local collective party). The drive between the two is only 90 minutes. This "double header" strategy maximizes your exposure and your income for a single ferry trip.

The Float Plane Option

Sometimes, time is money. If you have a day job or another gig in Vancouver, the Harbour Air float plane is a viable option. It takes you downtown-to-downtown in 30 minutes. While more expensive than the ferry, if it allows you to work a full day before the gig, the math often works out in your favor. Plus, the view is unbeatable.

Vernon's Island Tip: The last ferry back to Vancouver is usually around 9 PM, which is useless for a DJ. You will be spending the night. Don't rely on finding a hotel at 3 AM. Confirm your accommodation with the promoter in advance, or have a friend's couch ready. The "Island Crash" is a time-honored tradition.
