Surrey is the fastest-growing city in BC, and its musical output is starting to reflect that scale. A significant driver of this growth is the city’s large South Asian community, which is blending traditional influences with modern electronic production. This "Surrey Sound" is becoming one of the most exciting and unique contributions to the provincial scene.
From Bhangra to Bass
Surrey has a long history as a global hub for Bhangra music. In 2025, we are seeing a new generation of producers who grew up with these rhythms but are now applying them to House, Techno, and UK Bass. The result is a highly syncopated, high-energy sound that is gaining traction in Vancouver clubs and beyond. It’s a fusion that feels organic to the city's identity.
The Surrey Studio Revolution
As I’ve mentioned before, the availability of space in Surrey is leading to a boom in high-end home studios. Producers in Surrey are no longer commuting to Vancouver to record; they are building their own world-class facilities and inviting Vancouver artists to them. This shift is creating a self-sustaining creative ecosystem in the suburbs that is less dependent on the downtown core.
Community and Events
Keep an ear out for events hosted by Surrey-based collectives. These parties often feel more diverse and community-focused than the Granville strip, with a heavy emphasis on supporting local talent. The fusion of cultures in Surrey is its greatest creative asset, and the electronic music coming out of the city is the proof.
