Essential Online Communities for Producers

In the digital age, community isn’t just local—it’s global. For producers, especially those starting out, these online spaces are invaluable for learning, getting honest feedback, and networking with like-minded creators from around the world.

1. Gearspace (Electronic Music Forum)

The definitive place for technical and gear-focused discussions. Whether you’re troubleshooting an old synth or looking for the best compressor for your drum bus, the combined knowledge here is unparalleled. It’s also a great place to learn about the history of specific studio techniques used in classic house and techno.

2. Reddit (r/AdvancedProduction & r/HouseProduction)

These subreddits are excellent for direct community engagement. They often host feedback threads where you can share your works-in-progress and get constructive criticism from other producers. The "AdvancedProduction" sub, in particular, is a great place to dive deep into complex sound design and mixing topics.

3. Discord (Label & Artist-Led Servers)

Many underground labels and prominent producers now run their own Discord servers. These provide a much more intimate way to connect with the artists you admire and the people behind the labels. It’s often where "inside" information about demo submissions, upcoming releases, and technical tips is shared first.

4. Resident Advisor (Community & Comments)

While primarily a news and event platform, the community aspect of RA (especially through their specialized features and forum discussions) remains a vital way to track the global pulse of the underground scene and connect with the broader culture of electronic music.

Vernon's Take: When joining these communities, follow the "90/10 rule." Give 90% value—offer feedback to others, share your knowledge, support other artists—and only use 10% for self-promotion. You'll build much stronger and more genuine connections that way.
