Music Business Checklist for Independent Artists

Being a successful artist in 2026 requires more than just making good music; it requires staying on top of your business. Here is a checklist of the essential administrative tasks you should handle for every release.

1. Copyright and Registration

Ensure your music is registered with your national performing rights organization (like SOCAN in Canada, ASCAP or BMI in the US). This ensures you receive royalties whenever your music is played on the radio, in clubs, or on streaming platforms.

2. ISRC and UPC Codes

International Standard Recording Codes (ISRC) are unique identifiers for every track you release. UPC codes are for the entire release (album or EP). Most digital distributors will provide these, but ensure you keep a record of them for your own tracking.

3. Publishing and Neighboring Rights

Don't leave money on the table. Register with a publishing administrator to collect your mechanical royalties, and look into neighboring rights organizations (like Re:Sound in Canada) to collect royalties for the public performance of the actual recording.

4. Contract Templates

Never work without a contract. Whether it’s a remix agreement, a label deal, or a collaboration with another artist, have basic templates ready to ensure everyone is clear on ownership, royalty splits, and usage rights.
