Sustainable Event Production: The 2026 Standards

In 2026, sustainability is no longer optional. The global "Green Music Accord" has set ambitious targets for our industry, and BC—with its deep connection to nature—is at the forefront of this movement. Producing a "Green" event is about managing your carbon footprint, your waste, and your community impact.

1. Zero-Waste Management (A Greener Future)

The "A Greener Future" (AGF) certification is the global gold standard for sustainable festivals. It involves a rigorous audit of your waste management, energy use, and water consumption. In BC, events like Bass Coast lead the way by banning single-use plastics and implementing high-efficiency composting and recycling programs. A zero-waste dancefloor is a professional dancefloor.

2. Low-Carbon Power Solutions

Traditional diesel generators are being replaced by high-capacity battery systems and portable solar arrays. Companies in the PNW now offer "silent" power solutions that are both environmentally friendly and sonically superior (no more engine hum in the background). Transitioning your event to renewable power is the most significant move you can make for the planet.

3. Ethical Transportation and "Slow" Touring

The largest part of our carbon footprint is travel. The "Slow Touring" movement encourages artists to take longer residencies and travel by ground whenever possible. For promoters, this means prioritizing local and regional lineups. Supporting your "home" scene isn't just a cultural choice; it’s an environmental one. We must reduce the "fly-in" culture to ensure our scene's long-term survival.

4. Sustainable Procurement and Catering

Every dollar you spend on your event has an impact. Use local, seasonal catering. Source your building materials from sustainable suppliers (like those in the Richmond/Surrey industrial hubs). And ensure your merchandise is printed on ethical, recycled fabrics. Every link in your production chain should reflect your values as an artist and a member of the community.
