Vancouver Vinyl Pressing Guide

There is nothing quite like holding your own music on vinyl. While the process can be slow and expensive, it remains the ultimate mark of quality for many underground labels. Here is how to handle a vinyl release in BC.

1. Local vs. Global Pressing

While there are no major pressing plants left in Vancouver, there are brokers and smaller boutique operations in Canada (like Clampdown in Vancouver or Precision in Ontario) that can handle the logistics for you. Going local can save on shipping, but check global plants for specific turnaround times and specialty color options.

2. Mastering for Vinyl

Vinyl is a physical medium with physical limitations. You must have your tracks mastered specifically for vinyl. A vinyl mastering engineer will manage things like sibilance, phase issues in the low end, and overall dynamic range to ensure the record doesn't skip or sound distorted.

3. The Lacquer and the Plating

The process starts with cutting a lacquer disc, which is then used to create the metal stampers. This is where much of the character of the record is determined. Choose an engineer with a reputation for high-quality cuts (like those at Dubplates & Mastering or Ten Eight Seven).

4. Artwork and Packaging

Don't skimp on the visuals. A record is an object of art. Work with a local designer to ensure your templates are correct and your colors will translate well to print. Remember that vinyl manufacturing often takes 6-12 months, so plan your release schedule well in advance.
